Community

I believe, a truly vibrant community is built by listening to the sounds of every individual.

With understanding and resilience, we can challenge what many presume to be 'facts.'

What many presumed to be my greatest limitation, which is my hearing impairment, has become my most vital bridge that connects me to the people in need, allowing me to see the world from their perspective.

Over the past few years, this bridge has led me to spend more than 500 hours with the disabled (the majority of whom are children). In these moments, I have brought positivity into their lives by soothing them with my own story, weaving hope into handicrafts, and performing music that speaks when words fall short.

In his hand, he held the small and black object, which is my hearing aid. It was a piece of my own story, now resting in his.

He was 22, paralyzed by a cerebrospinal fluid leak from a workplace accident while he was carrying heavy objects, and trapped in the belief that his life was over. He had confessed to us that he’d even considered suicide. His paralysis, he thought, was an irreversible fact.

In that quiet room, I saw my own journey reflected in his despair. I shared my story. Then, the hearing aid became a tangible bridge that connects his world and mine.

Through multiple conversations and prayers, a flicker of hope returned to his eyes. It has been one year since his illness, and he was able to move by his own using a wheelchair through countless rehabilitation training.

Note: The picture shown above is one of the few photos I have with the patients, as it is not appropriate to take photo of them unless explicit permission has been obtained.
